Which native Infrastructure-as-Code tools exist for each cloud?
Options
- CloudFormation or CDK for AWS, Bicep or ARM for Azure, Terraform for both (Correct option)
- Only Terraform exists, and the clouds have no tools of their own
- Excel and Word templates are used to describe the infrastructure
- Jenkins only, because it builds the infrastructure from pipelines
Answer
AWS CloudFormation (and CDK); Azure ARM templates / Bicep; Terraform works on both
Why
Each cloud has its own IaC language: CloudFormation (YAML/JSON, plus the CDK in real programming languages) for AWS, and ARM templates or the simpler Bicep for Azure.
Terraform (and OpenTofu) is cloud-neutral and popular for multi-cloud or when one tool for all providers is preferred.
IaC means you review infrastructure changes in pull requests and can recreate environments reliably.
Remember
CloudFormation (AWS), Bicep/ARM (Azure), Terraform (any).
