What is SSH used for?
Options
- Sending emails securely between two mail servers on a network
- Logging in to a remote server and running commands over an encrypted link (Correct option)
- Hosting websites on a server that runs somewhere in the cloud
- Compressing files before they are sent over a slow network
Answer
Securely logging in to and running commands on a remote server over an encrypted connection
Why
ssh user@server opens an encrypted terminal session on a remote machine.
Authentication is usually with a key pair: your private key stays on your computer, the public key is installed on the server. That is safer than passwords.
Git also uses SSH to push to GitHub.
Remember
SSH = secure remote terminal.
