What are story points and velocity?
Options
- Points are relative effort; velocity, points per sprint (Correct option)
- Story points measure salary; velocity measures typing
- Story points are bugs; velocity is a server metric
- Both of them measure the lines of code written
Answer
Story points are a relative estimate of effort/complexity; velocity is how many points a team completes per sprint, used to forecast
Why
Estimating in hours is often wrong. Teams compare stories to each other: a 5 is roughly 2.5 times a 2. Sizes often follow Fibonacci (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13).
Velocity is the average number of points finished per sprint. It helps forecast how much fits in the next sprint or when a backlog could finish.
It is for planning, not for judging individuals or comparing teams.
Remember
Points = relative size. Velocity = points per sprint, for forecasting.
